{"id":65,"date":"2010-12-26T14:53:44","date_gmt":"2010-12-26T14:53:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/martynorris.com\/?page_id=65"},"modified":"2019-12-30T20:40:39","modified_gmt":"2019-12-31T01:40:39","slug":"about-me","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/martynorris.com\/?page_id=65","title":{"rendered":"About Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-92\" title=\"KD4AWV\" src=\"http:\/\/martynorris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/KD4AWV-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-88\" title=\"Marty DJ\" src=\"http:\/\/martynorris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/MartyDJ-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>From the days of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ron_Popeil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mr. Microphone<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atari\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Atari<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/TRS-80\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TRS-80<\/a>, long before\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mobile_phone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cellular Phones<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compact_Disc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Compact Discs<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ipod\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iPods<\/a>, Marty Norris has always had his hands in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">technology<\/a>.\u00a0 From a very early age, he found electronics to be particularly interesting, especially the wonderful world of radio.\u00a0 While in elementary school, Marty would spend snow days spinning\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gramophone_record\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">45 RPM records<\/a>, jamming his father&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gramophone_record\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">8-track tapes<\/a>, and broadcasting to all of Bina, NC (suburb of Lansing, NC) via an ultra low powered FM Transmitter.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-91\" title=\"W4MLN\" src=\"http:\/\/martynorris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSCN0017-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>During his middle school years at Northwest Ashe High School, Marty was introduced to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amateur_radio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amateur Radio<\/a> (aka Ham Radio), by his seventh grade science teacher.\u00a0 Soon he would have a license from the FCC to surf the shortwave frequencies and make friends all around the world.\u00a0 In 1991, at the age of 13, Mr. Marty was<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-89 alignright\" title=\"Marty Scout\" src=\"http:\/\/martynorris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/MartyScout-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/> the youngest amateur radio operator in Ashe County.\u00a0 Scouting has always been part\u00a0of\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-86\" title=\"djmarty\" src=\"http:\/\/martynorris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/djmarty-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Marty&#8217;s life. He obtained his\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eagle_Scout_(Boy_Scouts_of_America)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eagle Scout<\/a> award in 1994 with Troop 214 and is still involved today with area scouting functions.\u00a0 By 1996, he would graduate from Northwest Ashe and then pursue a degree from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Appalachian_State_University\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Appalachian State University<\/a> in Technology Education.\u00a0 In June of 1998, Marty got the college kid&#8217;s dream job at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WKSK-AM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WKSK<\/a> in West Jefferson.\u00a0 He would return to his roots by playing DJ on the weekends, and became part of the dynamic duo on Friday nights that would broadcast Ashe County High School football.\u00a0 To this day, he still remains part of the 5000 watt &#8220;Voice of the Huskies&#8221; and involved with WKSK&#8217;s technical and engineering staff. \u00a0Marty pioneered the station&#8217;s first website and assisted WKSK to become the first station in the high country to stream audio over the internet.\u00a0 In December 2000, Marty walked the stage at ASU to receive his B.S. degree in <a title=\"ASU Technology Education\" href=\"https:\/\/cte.appstate.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Technology Education<\/a> with two concentrations (Secondary Education and Trade and<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-90\" title=\"Masters Crew\" src=\"http:\/\/martynorris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/MastersCrew-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-93\" title=\"Marty &amp; G @ Watauga\" src=\"http:\/\/martynorris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/122107martygwatauga-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Industry).\u00a0 In 2001 while searching for a professional position, Marty was hired to teach math at Ashe County High School.\u00a0 The following year, he was moved into a Technology Facilitator position at West Jefferson and Fleetwood Elementary Schools.\u00a0 Soon in August 2004, the two schools would become one; <a title=\"Westwood Elementary School\" href=\"https:\/\/asheschools.org\/wwes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Westwood\u00a0Elementary<\/a>.\u00a0 From this point on, Marty would be responsible for all facets of technology at Westwood during the IMPACT Grant. It was during this time, that he obtained his M.A. in <a title=\"ASU Instructional Technology\" href=\"https:\/\/edtech.appstate.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instructional Technology<\/a> from ASU (December 2006).\u00a0 In 2010, his alma mater (ASU) called on him to become an adjunct faculty member in the <a title=\"ASU Department of Technology\" href=\"http:\/\/tec.appstate.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Technology<\/a>.
